When an abnormal explosion and total communications blackout cut off the A.E.G.I.S. Institute, a Kerzhovian special-operations unit is dispatched into the sealed exclusion zone to recover sensitive research and uncover the cause of the breach. But the area around the Institute has become something far worse than contaminated ground: a fear-reactive anomalous environment that turns buried memories, private shame, and unresolved guilt into instruments of psychological destruction. As the mission collapses into paranoia and moral disintegration, the fighters realize that the greatest threat may not be the Institute at all, but the parts of themselves the zone refuses to let them hide. Some will try to correct the past. None will leave it unchanged.
